You could remove the baseboards, Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl), including any quarter round, and tile up to the cabinet kickplates and walls. Then, in some future year, you could replace the cabinets. But they would have to have an almost identical layout to the current ones. You then put in plywood to raise the level of the cabinets to the tile level, and reinstall the dishwasher. Or if you want a different cabinet layout, you could fill in with tiles.
But the grout will give you away, as it will never match. I have the same problem as Carla, but her question remains unanswered. I have stripped my dining room down to the concrete sub floor but my kitchen has a very secure vinyl floring that has no issues. The two areas connect and I want to lay ceramic tile in both areas for continuity. Is there something I can lay down in the dining room to make it even with the kitchen, or should I just make the thinset thicker in that area?
I am stuck, too. Please help! Thanks for the question! If I tile over the existing vinyl. My tile will be higher than my carpet. Do they make a ceramic trasition strip that will match the tile?
HELP… I am wanting to put cermic tile around my bathtub and have been told it will be hard to get this done with out leaking down the road! I am planning on replacing kitchen and bathroom floors with ceramic tiles. I need to clarify the article above. Am I reading this correct. What type of glue could I get to put self adhedsive vinyl tile on top of vinyl tile when id did not stick to the old vinyl flooring. I have a half inch plywood subfloor and three quarter inch particle board on top of that-there are two layers of vinyl flooring attached to the particle board-can i put three eights plywood over the vinyl and screw down to first layer of plywood -this will be for a kitchen floor that is very well braced to concrete crawl space.
I intend to do floor with slate. Never having a ceramic floor before, we went along with it. As you may guess the tiles cracked, came loose etc…We would like to put down new tile. Can we put backer board on the existing tile or will we have to destroy the tile and then add the backer board? The tile Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl) our shower floor is constantly building up with mildew. We have regrouted, resealed, scrubbed and cleaned and keeps coming back.
We spray with clorox and nothing seems to work. Our plan is to redo the existing tile floor without removing the existing tile. I am wanting to know if you can lay new ceramic tile over existing tile in a shower floor? What are the best and least expensive options? I dont want to take them up. I have been using Bono laminate floor cleaner on my laminet floors but the last time I bought it I accidentally picked up Bono hardwood cleaner.
My question is can I use the Bono hardwood cleaner on my laminate floors without hurting them? We just purchased our first home and started fixing it up. In the kitchen we layed pergo over laminate flooring with a layer of thin foam between them.
There are areas that are completely bowed already. Is there anything we can do to fix this? I am renovating a former rental townhouse built in I am planning to use a laminate through the townhouse with ceramic tile in the bathroooms. The floors leading up to the bathrooms are carpeted. The carpet is being removed and the laminate is going down. I have never tiled before, but would like to do this myself to save money. Should I replace them before or after tiling?
The design of the cabinets has an opening on the bottom. Can you put roofing felt on top of vinyl flooring to put ceramic tile down. The vinyl flooring is on a cement. Im in west Memphis AR! Wish me well I will keep you posted and thanks!
I want to lay a stone type tile flooring in my kitchen. The problem is I have laminate flooring laid over old asbestos tile. My dishwasher has leaked and swollen some of the laminate. The floor is on top of fir strip flooring. Can I screw the laminate down and lay the tile over top if I use lots of screws and make the fllor really secure? I plan to lay Vinyl tiles over Linoleum Floor in my bathroom. Do I need to remove the toliet or can i cut the tile to fit around the toliet?
Question: I want to lay tile over an existing vinyl floor. The existing vinyl is layed on a wood subfloor.
Because thinkness is an issue, can I use a polyethylene membrane over the vinyl or do I need to use the cement substrate?
We have a s house, with small squares of ceramic flooring—black and white. A few pieces are missing at the closet door, and at the bathroom door.
I just want it to look better. Can we use linoleum over the ceramic tiling? I have vinyl tiles on the floor. The edges on these tiles have risen but the raise is extremely minute. Can I put new tiles over these tiles or can I glue felt paper on the existing tiles and then put the new tiles on top of the felt paper.
The new tiles are peel and stick. I am getting ready to put 12 x 12 linoluem squares over an existing linoluem floor. Can I just stick them directly on the Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl) floor?
Hi Mark, Your question about installing a tile floor was answered in the first hour of our September 15th Homefront home improvement radio show. I am trying to remove the linoleum in my kitchen and carpet in the dining area and tile both. Can I use the plywood as a substitute for backerboard in the kitchen and add the backerboard in the dining area only … then the height would be right for a continuous floor.
I would like to lay cermic tile in my Utility Room that currently has lenoleum. It is seal great except for the small stip that was layed in the back about four inch wide which is turning up.
Is there something I can do to make those edges lay down and be able to put the cermic tile on top of them without removing the lenoleum in total.
The cermic tile has its own sticky back and we intend to use grout inbetween them. If I do have to remove it first — it would be the sub-flooring I would be laying the cermic tile on…. Excellent, excellent page good answers, and good information, love read it alot. I have a question about Shulter-Ditra. Hi i want to lay ceramic tiles in my kitchen the existing lino tiles are pulling up really easily and there is a very thin very hard black layer left on the concrete which i assume is the old adhesive but like i say its very thinflat and harddoes it all have to come up before i lay the ceramic tiles?
I got this site from my pal who shared with me about this web site and now this time I am visiting this web page and reading very informative posts at this place.
Hi I want to lay ceramic tiles in basement. Hello, we live on a concrete slab and currently have Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl) self adhesive 12 x 12 tiles on the floor, which were installed over existing I am sure asbestos commercial type tiles.
We want to install sanded plywood flooring on top of this. What would be the best way to do so…glue down, nail down using concrete nail gun or both? Thanks for any input! My question is similar to one above regarding a manufactured home.
Our home has OSB board with vinyl overlay. I do not know if there is plywood under the OSB. Thanks for the great post, I have a tricky question from Sweden. In our apartment from 70s uses an interesting combination of Round Gravel layer on top of Concrete Floor. Then on top of round gravel, there are plywood boards, and finally Vinyl flooring on top of that. Now I want to lay ceramic tiles on top of that in our kitchen area, the floor is pretty firm and does not bend or squeak with normal load.
But great article. While hoping to just put down tile over old bathroom vinyl floor, we decided to pull up flooring about 4in from the walls only to find moisture on concrete subfloor. We continued to remove all vinyl and found moisture in some areas, now we are not sure how to continue??? What should we do to continue our project? Installing PVC plank tiles with tongue and groove over vinyl self-adhesive tiles.
Do I need to use a glue or an underlayer? Hi, Is it okay to lay a levelling substrate directly over lino tiles? And if so, what properties does the substrate need? I want to lay ceramic tiles over a concrete floor covered in lino but this needs levelling first. Many thanks. Hi, I have a large room which has vinyl tile. I want to place ceramic tile over this and was told by a local store that I have to remove the existing vinyl before I can place ceramic tile as the vinyl is not porous and the ceramic tile will not adhere to the vinyl floor.
Can you give me a suggestion as to what I can place over this vinyl? Thanks, Dottie peterson. I had a professional floor company install procelon tiles in my kitchen and requested removal of two sheets of old vinyl and possibility of new subfloor due to the height the finished floor would be above my hardwood dining room floor.
I was ignored and the floor was put over the existing two vinyl and subfloor and is now one inch higher than hardwood floor.
The company suggests a reducer to transition. You comments as to my recourse is greatly appreciated. I had no problem with cost of work with removing vinyl and subfloor and expressed this to the salesperson. I am concerned about the health risks posed by the PVC in the old vinyl tiles in my kitchen.
I have recently read that PVC can pose a health threat. Is it sufficient to cover over them or do I need to remove them before installing Marmoleum click-it tiles? Is it safe to have the old PVC tiles underneath the tiles? These tiles have a cork backing and click together. I was told I did not need to remove the old flooring for installation purposes but my concern is more about the PVC remaining under the surface. Can you address this? I am laying tile in the entrance of a manufactured home that is on a permanent concrete foundation.
The subfloor is particle board that currently has vinyl floor on it. Can electric heating cables be installed over top of vinyl flooring stuck over top of plywood and then covered with tile? Same question. How we ironed it: Based on how the first round went, I was even more hesitant to apply a hot iron to a possibly very melty carpet.
I applied heat at first 2 seconds at a time, and once I realized my carpet wasn't going to melt yay! I applied heat for about 8 more seconds. My guess is that the carpet is polyester which is why it worked. The iron and pressure really weighed down and flattened the pile of the rug so it lost its fluffiness, and honestly it looks really strange!
But it worked! How we ironed it: I used the standard HTV settings and I think one more second and the linoleum would have been a bit too melty for my comfort. Result: It works so great! I even tried to peel up the HTV with my weeding tool and it was impossible to peel the vinyl off.
This would be an amazing way to recycle some old linoleum! Result: The HTV did stick Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl) the tile! This tile had a little bit of texture which I think added the perfect amount of grip. Because some tiles seem to always have a powdery feel to them, I made sure to wipe the dust off the tile before applying the HTV. The tile we were working with was very polished.
I think this would have worked if the tile wasn't polished because again, the HTV needs something to grip to. As you can see, I couldn't even peel up the carrier sheet- the HTV was not sticking at all. How we ironed it: I wasn't sure if the iron would melt the mat so I only applied heat seconds at a time using my mini iron. This mat is made of polypropylene, which has a melting point of degrees Fahrenheit, so I made sure my iron wasn't quite that hot.
Result: The vinyl looks phenomenal on this doormat! Just like the linoleum, I got the mat hot enough that both the mat and the HTV got sticky enough to permanently bind to each other. Result: It did not work! I think the texture in the basketball was too bumpy for the HTV to get a good grip. As it turns out, HTV can easily be ironed on way more than just fabric!
What surfaces are you looking forward to trying? Craftables Have you ever wanted to try and iron t-shirt vinyl on an unconventional surface but wondered if it would work? HTV on Leather. How we ironed it: I tried this test with all the normal heat settings and it worked perfectly! Result: The HTV is fully stuck to the leather and doesn't feel like it could easily peel off.
HTV on canvas. Result:The HTV stuck perfectly! HTV on a mousepad. HTV on a notebook. How we ironed it: Natasha* - I Cant Hold On (Vinyl) used all the normal heat settings and it worked perfectly! HTV on an acrylic blank. HTV on a metal lunchbox. HTV on cork. How we ironed it: Using standard HTV settings and lots of pressure. HTV on glass. Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc. Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing. Sometimes the record is of different quality on the ' A ' and 'B' side.
