Aside from the horns being mixed too upfront on Artificial Energy, all the songs fit together extremely well, there's a great flow to the album and it's cool hearing what Roger McGuinn does with the Moog. This was also the first release where McGuinn is first billed as Roger instead of Jim. The bonus stuff rounds the album out in fine fashion.
The 5th Dimension seemed to point in a very hopeful direction. The Byrds had too much talent to stay in the same place. They did the right thing by making their albums more and more mature in a good way. With Younger than Yesterday as well as 5D we heard them begin to get psychedelic and deal with heavy subject matter such as atom bombs and deep meditation, as well as commentary on the record business etc. My only problem with this band is they should of went even less pop.
For example with this record the songs are too short even for this time period. Crosby was half out of the group and does not have as much material as the last album which was dominated by his input. Crosby in my opinion has the strongest songs just like the last one.
The jam at the end of the album about a festival Crosby was really good with psychedelic songs about festivals--Renaissance Fair--last albumcaptures a wonderful blend of jazz and heavy cream style rock. That jam could be a whole style of music in itself. This album has a lot of phasing and psychedelic effect almost to the extent of being experimental to the next level. There is a Moog used on this album.
It is a shame that The Byrds lost half of their audience with the last 2 albums with Crosby. It is a skill in itself finding a way to transition out of a total pop band. As musicians age this must be tough when your in the mainstream. This extended version is great and plays like an extension of the album fillip in some of that too short complaint.
Crosbys controversial Triad although it seems incomplete is included. It seems like it was outtake and there is no commentary about it in the cd booklet. There is also a sweet moog jam that also is a mystery--it has no notes. That is not a complaint -i will prob have to read a Byrds history to find out more about that.
In conclusion i not only recommend this album but the last 3 Byrds albums that i will call psychedelic. I think this and Sweetheart of the Rodeo are the best Byrds albums and they almost sound like they could be together on one album but as I've grown older I think this is the best one. I bought the vinyl album in as soon as I heard some of it on the radio for the first time but it was already 6 years old by then.
If any young people are just discovering the Byrds and still don't know why they were so great, just listen to this, on vinyl if you can get it. I still listen to it on vinyl and prefer that sound because the CD has extra tracks on it which I like but I don't like track 17 as you can hear what sounds like a very heated argument going on in the studio.
They really should have left that off because it detracts from the beauty of the rest of it. I would give the vinyl album 6 stars if I could. I would have given the CD only 4 stars because of track 17 but I love this album too much to give it less than 5.
Might I say that this is the best Byrds album? In my opinion at least The combination of pop, rock, psychedelic and country is just beautiful. Whenever I go camping, this album will be playing. It's happy, it's mysterious and its natural just like the song Natural Harmony. Gorgeous, brilliant album. This is where the Byrds really hit their peak in songwriting and experimentation.
What is deceptive is the release date that was given is May 4, leading one to believe this was a recently Remastered CD. The actual Remastering for this CD was done in This is an reissue of that Remastering not a recently Remastered CD. Buyer should be aware of this fact. My favorite Byrds album, except for Untitled, from start to finish a complete album, you don't have to use the selector button on your cd player.
Has a nice cycle to it, except for the first cut that sounds a little dated now. With all the band member changes could have sounded a lot more scattered but it's pretty integrated and consistent all the way through.
A good mid transitional period cd of the original folk-rock band, the Byrds. This is a short CD with some outtakes and alternate versions of some of the songs included. I love the original despite some of the lyrics making it sound a bit dated hippie stuff. The music's great and the vocal harmonies are as good as the Byrds ever did.
They were transitioning from their earlier folk rock to a more country sound at this point, so you get the best of both styles here.

One person found this helpful. Brilliant band and a brilliant cd. Load more international reviews. Great album all brilliant tracks and produced when they were falling out with each other which makes it more amazing! Easily the byrds best album. Not a bad song on it. Trippy 60s rock doesn't get much better than this. Bought this when it first came out in the 60s Still good now. Good bit of nostalgia. Marvelous sounding CD - blows away the s Sony re-master.
Level of detail and separation is just superb and there's the bonus of the magnificent "Lady Friend" as an extra track.

This Sony edition of Album) Notorious Byrd Brothers contains additional material, tacked on to the last track After a few seconds pause, we hear an attempt to record a number for which Michael Clarke either cannot or won't play what McGuinn, Crosby, and producer Gary Usher suggest would be appropriate: a jazz shuffle rhythm and relevant turns to accent different sections of the song.
The crew are variously encouraging of Clarke, Usher especially, but the drummer seemingly hates the material and, perhaps, his inability to provide what's required. At one point Crosby and McGuinn have a mild go at each over the other's ego, but, basically they seem to have a shared vision of what they want to accomplish. This studio chatter is instructive and no doubt is representative of any of that era's rock bands' toil to create something fresh in the studio. If this is also included in the Byrds' boxed set, perhaps someone can mention it.
It would've been a nice touch if Sony had told us which tracks featured subsitute drummer Jim Gordon. Had a mono LP of Younger than Yesterday, which is a fantastic album deserving at least of an upgrade to stereo, so I bought the bonus tracks re-issue. So what then of the following year's product, the Notorious Byrd Brothers? Was it in the same league? All sorts of claims have been made for this album, so I got the bonus version of it too. Afraid it doesn't quite stack up.
If there is any unity of mood to it, it's the hippie social protest drug-inspired thing of the period summer of love etc. The best of the bunch is "Change is Now", and the worst is "Space Odyssey", a sea shanty with metaphysical lyrics that comes off sounding like a dirge.
David the crazy lovable libertine with the voice like honey. It's wonderful to have the original of "Triad" as one of the bonus tracks here; the Airplane's overall production of the track may top this version, but not even Grace's vocal can top David's. So yes, there are definitely reasons to get this album, but on the whole I would describe it as enjoyable fluff.
Most of these songs are not going to stand the test of time. Time and life are short. One should focus on the best. You've read the top international reviews. Pages with related products.
